Surgery Complete!

June 1, 2010 by Tom Sepper

The big day finally arrived. We got to the hospital about 7:20 this morning, and proceeded to the outpatient surgery wing. I had already pre-registered and signed all the papers they make you sign last week, so that was definitely nice not having to deal with that this morning.

Once in the preop room, the nurse came in, put in my IV, and then came the “best” part — the waiting game. My surgery was scheduled for 9:00, so I was thrilled when my doctor came in and said they were going to be wheeling me in about 8:40.

The doctor came out to talk to Monica at 9:55. The surgery went well; no surprises (always a great thing!). There was a surprise, though. They went ahead and cut the testicle open and discovered two blood clots. The doctor said that they’re there due to one of two reasons:

  1. I experienced some sort of trauma, and as a result, two blood clots occurred.
  2. The tumor inside the testicle caused the two blood clots.

I don’t recall any kind of trauma, so I’m guessing it’s the second option. I doubt we’ll ever really know.

After waking up in my post-op “space”, I was transitioned back to the same room I was in pre-surgery. The nurse went over discharge instructions and whatnot with us, and let me know that in order to be *really* released, I had to urinate.

So after one cup of water, an 8 oz. diet Shasta (Shasta, really? ;) ), two cups of apple juice, and two other attempts, I was able to finally to go. We left the hospital about 1:45.

The doctor mentioned before the surgery that there’s a 95% chance this was cancer due to the mass being inside the testicle; if the mass had been on the outside of the testicle, it was only a 5% chance of it being cancer. I have a follow-up appointment with my doctor on June 10th at which time he’ll go over the pathology report and whatnot.

Thank you to Monica, Katie Lynn, Karyn, my parents, my sister, and my mother-in-law for being at the hospital to support me. I have the best wife, kids, parents, sister, and in-laws a guy could ever ask for.

Thank you also to everyone who has kept me and my family in your thoughts and prayers. Words can’t express how much I appreciate everyone.
